Diiodomethane is a compound widely used as a reagent for cyclopropanation in the Simmons-Smith reaction with a Zn-Cu couple. Diiodomethane also undergoes photolysis, and, if in the presence of olefins, will yield cyclopropanes with high stereospecificity.
